She was relieved when instead of being insulted, Maggie let out a big laugh.

“Wow, I wish you could see the look on your face right now,” Maggie managed through her laughter. “But to answer your question,” she continued, regaining her composure. “No, I was not in a pod, I was overseeing the pods. I’m a doctor so I made sure everyone was safe during the journey. I was awake, I was just with everyone below deck.” Maggie offered Julia another cup of water. “That’s probably why we didn’t meet on the ship.”

“Possibly,” Julia said taking the cup and drinking heartily. “But then none of us really interacted on the ship so I’m not so sure we would remember each other anyway.”

Susuda met Julia’s eye as he and two other warriors rounded a tent. He held her gaze for a beat before they helped themselves to the food laid out before them. “Well that’s our cue,” Maggie announced getting up and brushing off. “Coming?”

“Where,” Julia asked.

“There are things to discuss,” Maggie went on to explain motioning towards the tent Susuda and the other Warriors disappeared into.

Julia paused for a moment at the opening of the tent to give her eyes time to adjust to the darker interior. Maggie went to the side of one of the Warriors and gave him a big smile before sitting beside him on a bench. Susuda stood and motioned for her to take a seat beside him. She did so, not wanting to cause a scene or be too obvious in front of their hosts, but she still had lingering feelings from their discussion. She still had questions and plenty left to say but she would be silent for now. She took a seat beside Susuda and mentally reminded herself there would be time to discuss everything later.

“This is Julia,” Susuda said to the other Warriors when they were all settled.

“I am Balasi, he is Arakhu and you have met my mate, Maggie,” the large Warrior said motioning around at the others.

“Mate,” Julia questioned looking at Maggie who sat staring up at Balasi with a besotted grin.

“We have information that Mattaki is at his family’s hunting dwelling. We have an insider at the Academy that can get us the coordinates. We will need his leadership, and his connections in the coming leps.” Balasi looked from Susuda to Arakhu.

Susuda raised his head and breathed deeply as he considered the possibilities. He shook his head. “I have been in contact with the High Commander. I will get the information to him.”

“Will we not go to Mattaki,” Arakhu asked.

“No, we cannot risk it. If we know this information, we must assume the Scincidians do as well. It would put us and Mattaki at much risk.” Susuda looked to Maggie and then to Julia. “I will not invite more danger upon the humans.”

“Danger is coming with an invitation or without,” Maggie added rubbing Balasi’s glowing bicep. She stared into his eyes in a way that betrayed their intimacy. Balasi’s stared back at her with pride.
